There's a great
story behind these
pictures.
It was 1991, the
third year NASCAR
came to Sears
Point. It was very
hard to view the
stock cars in the
garage area. On
one side you had
the team haulers
blocking your view
and on the other
you had the
NASCAR trailers.
Their was only one
small clear shot
between 2 trailers
behind the garage
fence along pit
road. The
gentleman in the
red hat was the
director of
competition Dick
Beatty, he came
over to us and I
said "great, he's
going to ask us to
leave." Being the
grandpa type he is,
he started talking
to Rocky. He asked
if Rocky would like
to sit in a racecar. My wife and I looked at each other and said, "sure." We lifted Rocky over the
fence to Mr Beatty, it just so happened that Kyle Petty's #42 Mello Yello car was in the
inspection area. He put Rocky in the car and strapped him in. Another gentleman came and
grabbed our camera and shot off these photos. We joke that this was the start of Rocky's racing
career at age 2.
Now it's 14 1/2 years latter and the dream of driving a racecar around a superspeedway became a reality.
Here we are at California Speedway for the Richard Petty Driving Experience.
Rocky ran two sessions, a total of 18 laps and got up to a top speed of 146 mph. He felt so comfortable in the car,
He said it was so very easy to drive. He had to stay behind the instructor, if not he would have loved to see what this
baby could do. It rained that morning, so we had to wait until they dried the track with the jet driers, just like for a
NASCAR race.
